Periodontology
It is a branch of dental medicine that deals with prevention, diagnosis and treatment of tooth periodontal structures: gingiva, bone and periodontal ligament. Inadequate oral hygiene, smoking, systemic diseases and genetic factors lead to the development of periodontal disease. Periodontal diseases are divided into two major groups: gingivitis and periodontitis.
Gingivitis is caused by the accumulation of bacteria on the teeth and the formation of tartar. The result is inflammation of the gingiva, redness and bleeding from the gingiva. Unrecognized and untreated gingivitis passes into periodontitis and the creation of a periodonal pocket with irreversibile bone loss due to the spread of bacterial infection in deeper tissue. Symptoms of periodontitis include bleeding gums, bad breath, moving of the teeth, redness and retraction of gums. Periodontitis is the most common oral disease and requires prompt therapy.
It can not be cured, but can be controlled and prevent further spread of the disease and deterioration of the teeth. Therapy consists of the mechanical removal of the inflammatory tissue and residues of the tartar from the pockets with special periodontal instruments. Patients are provided with an obligatory brochure for enchances oral hygiene, which should be strictly followed.
In periodontal therapy, besides patient and doctoral co-operation, the most important factor is the motivation and obedience of the patient to see the results of the therapy to mutual satisfaction.
